Duchess Meghan is in ‘early stages’ conversations about a role in ‘The Gentlemen’

Tina Brown and Bronte Coy got the ball rolling late last week, announcing that the Duchess of Sussex was coming back to acting. Not only that, they claimed that Meghan had already gotten a job on a British production and the job was one of the reasons why the Sussexes planned on returning to the UK for an extended period. Deadline followed up with their exclusive: Meghan does not have the job locked down, but she’s in talks for a role in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen, Season 3. Which hasn’t been written yet because Netflix hasn’t renewed for a third season.

Meghan Markle may be teaming up with Guy Ritchie for her return to acting. As a report started circulating Friday morning that she has been “offered a role in an upcoming project based in the UK,” I hear that the former Suits star is in talks to join Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen for Season 3.

Sources caution that the conversations are in early stages and are hypothetical at this point because The Gentlemen, starring Theo James, has not been renewed for a third season yet, though that is considered likely; its second season premieres Sept. 3. Additionally, no role has been identified so far, I hear.

While it’s unclear whether the talks would lead to a deal, Markle getting a showy part on The Gentlemen — which films in the UK — would make sense. The stunt casting would bring a lot of attention to the show, and potentially new viewers. And it’s in the family — Markle and Prince Harry have a first-look deal at Netflix, where they have projects in development across film and TV.

Word of the potential casting comes as Markle and Prince Harry, who have been living in California for the past six years, announced earlier this week that they would be returning to the UK for an extended period of time.

In Season 2 of The Gentlemen, set in the same world as Ritchie’s 2019 Miramax film, it’s been one year since Eddie (James) and Susie (Kaya Scodelario) joined forces to work together in Bobby’s (Ray Winstone) criminal empire overseas. As they drive to expand their enterprise, the decisions Bobby is making seem to be increasingly unsound. Now Eddie and Susie must decide whether to take action or risk losing it all, but unfettered ambition never ends well.

The Hollywood Reporter had a somewhat similar exclusive, but instead of “the conversations are in early stages,” their sources say that Meghan is “in advanced discussions,” and the role is currently being written. They also say that Meghan has met Guy Ritchie via “mutual acquaintances.” I mean, probably their agents? But the point is that a lot of people were screaming “okay, this makes sense, this is why she agreed to go back to Salt Island!” No, it doesn’t! If this is happening (a big if), I guarantee that Meghan only started looking for work after she and Harry already decided to go back. I don’t think this is “the reason” why they’re moving.

And if all of this isn’t dumb enough, Tina Brown now claims that Ritchie withdrew the offer because of the “backlash” to Meghan. Yes, directors and producers famously loathe hiring people who will give their projects millions of dollars in free advertising. Literally, I had no idea that this show even existed before now. And you know what? I’m not going to get excited about any part of this until we hear that Meghan has signed on to a role and that the show has been renewed.
