San Felice is a winery in Tuscany that is rooted in Faith and the Land. Named after an early Christian saint, the estate was previously owned by the Grisaldi Del Taja family, founding members of the Chianti Classico consortium. In 1968, ownership transitioned to Enzo Morganti, who has dedicated himself to high-quality winemaking and research.

San Felice’s Vitiarium Project is a groundbreaking initiative in viticultural sustainability. Launched in the 1980s, the Vitiarium Project revived near-extinct local Tuscan grape varieties and broke ground on a vineyard dedicated to preserving local viticultural biodiversity. La Pieve is a name that reflects the land and its history. The word ‘pieve’ in Italian means the main church or parish which governs all the other churches in the area and is responsible for baptisms. Its sacred duties foreshadow all activities in the region and that includes winemaking. The winemakers take their duties seriously and pursue their vocation with an almost religious fervor. Made primarily from Sangiovese grapes which are the bedrock of Tuscany, La Pieve is a medium-bodied Chianti Classico with a distinguished personality notable for its elegance. Luminous ruby red in color, it pairs well with aged cheeses and cured salami and sausages, and is great with full-flavored red sauced pastas, and grilled meat.
The wine has scents and flavors of cherry, raspberry, and sweet violets, with subtle tannins and crisp acidity.
San Felice Pugnitello Toscana 2022-$70
San Felice Pugnitello Toscana IGT is a rich, full-bodied red wine from Tuscany, Italy, made from the rare, native Pugnitello grape, which San Felice helped revive in collaboration with the University of Florence.
This ancient Tuscan variety is known for its deep color, velvety texture, and complex aromas of dark fruit (cherry and blackberry), spice (cinnamon, cedar), and earthy notes. This “Super Tuscan” style of wine pairs well with roasted meats, wild game, and aged cheeses.
Key characteristics of this rare wine include a full-bodied structure with velvety, smooth tannins and bright acidity.
The name “Pugnitello” means “little fist,” referring to the shape of the grape’s tight clusterson the vine.
Pugnitello is a challenging grape to grow and even more challenging when it comes to turning it into wine.
Growing produces very low yields, so making the wine is purely a labor of love. As the grape’s leading producer, San Felice is responsible for its revival, thus saving this grape from extinction.

This past March San Felice officially introduced Francesca Giuggioli as the new head winemaker for their Chianti Classico estate, marking a natural evolution for her after having spent more than 15 years with the company.
