Hockey roundup: MSU tops Penn State in OT; Horcoff scores winner for Michigan

play

Tiernan Shoudy scored in overtime for No. 1-ranked Michigan State in a 2-1 victory over No. 3 Penn State on Friday at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing.

South Lyon’s Trey Augustine made 24 saves and Anthony Romani scored the other goal for the Spartans.

Gavin McKenna, the projected No. 1 overall pick for the 2026 NHL Draft, scored for the Nittany Lions.

“I thought that as the game went on, we got better and better,” Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale said. “I thought there were parts of the game that we played better, and parts of the game that I’ll give to them. I thought both goalies played well. I thought (Tommi) Mannisto, he had multiple breakaways, and their guy did a heck of a job.

“I thought that (Anthony) Romani’s goal was a big goal, he’s a really good player, but in that battle, he had some poise, puts it under the bar. Then for Tommi and (Tiernan) Shoudy to finish that one off, it was a big play, and they have an opportunity tomorrow to keep growing as a team.”

Michigan State improves to 6-1-0 while Penn State falls to 9-2-0. They’ll meet again Saturday at 4 p.m.

Michigan 7, Wisconsin 4

No. 2-ranked Michigan beat No. 10 Wisconsin, 7-4, on Friday at Yost Ice Arena in East Lansing.

Michael Hage scored two goals in the third period, Will Horcoff netted his team-leading 11th goal, T.J. Hughes had one goal and three assists and Jack Ivankovic stopped 20-of-24 shots.

The Wolverines and Badgers will play again Saturday at 8 p.m.

Denver 3, Western Michigan 1

No. 4 Western allowed three goals in the third period in a 3-1 loss to No. 9 Denver on Friday night at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo.

Zaccharya Wisdom scored the only goal for the Broncos and Hampton Slukynsky made 26 saves.

The two teams will wrap up the two-game series on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Rejuvenated Penguins are on a roll

Pittsburgh – Sidney Crosby has been doing this for longer than Ben Kindel has been alive. Alex Ovechkin has, too, for that matter.

So yeah, it was maybe a little surreal for the Pittsburgh Penguins rookie forward, all of 18, to be on the ice Thursday night alongside the two players who have defined their franchises and in many ways the NHL for two decades and counting.

The calendar says it’s 2025. Yet watching the 39-year-old Crosby score two goals to boost his season total to an NHL-leading 11 and have the 40-year-old Ovechkin collect two assists to fuel a second-period Washington rally in what eventually became a 5-3 Penguins victory, it was hard to tell.

“Kind of like the old Sid and Ovi rivalry there,” Kindel said after picking up the first two assists of his still very young career. “It was great to see and unreal to watch.”

That Crosby and Ovechkin found a way to summon a little something special during their 99th all-time meeting (playoffs included) is hardly surprising. The two future Hall of Famers have long had a habit of bringing out the best in each other.

What is surprising, however, is that for the first time in what seems like a long time – by the Penguins’ standards at least – the game felt like it carried actual stakes.

The team considered a long shot to reach the playoffs when the season began – only woeful Chicago and San Jose faced slimmer odds of hoisting the Stanley Cup than Pittsburgh – finds itself tied with New Jersey for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division a month in.

Yes, it’s not even Thanksgiving yet. And yes, the injuries are starting to pile up, from veteran forward Rickard Rakell to 6-foot-6 “power” forward Justin Brazeau, from goaltender Tristan Jarry to center Filip Hallander, who the team announced Friday is out at least three months because of a blood clot in his leg.

Still, the Penguins have been one of the NHL’s most pleasant early surprises.

A massive influx of fresh faces and fresh blood has brought an energy that was lacking as the team’s run of three championships in nine years became an increasingly distant memory.

The arrival of first-year coach Dan Muse and his high-energy approach has provided a jolt. So has the emergence of teenagers Kindel and 19-year-old defenseman Harrison Brunicke, who has shown promise during an extended look before he likely returns to his junior team for a little more seasoning.

“They always give us juice,” said Penguins forward Bryan Rust, who at 33 is the fourth-longest tenured player on the team behind Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. “Obviously, they’re so excited to come in the rink and they’re having fun. They always got a smile on their face and they are also really, really good players. So I think that combination can really help a few of us older guys that have a little bit more fun, too.”

Friday’s NHL

Minnesota 5, (at) N.Y. Islanders 2: Kirill Kaprizov had a goal and an assist, and Minnesota beat the New York Islanders.

Vinnie Hinostraza, Danila Yurov, Brock Faber and Marco Rossi also scored for Minnesota in its third win in four games. Jesper Wallstedt finished with 25 saves.

Emil Heineman and Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored for the Islanders and David Rittich had 21 saves as New York lost its second straight and snapped a three-game point streak (2-0-1).

Chicago 4, (at) Calgary 0: Connor Bedard had a goal and three assists, Spencer Knight stopped 33 shots for his first shutout of the season, and Chicago beat Calgary.

Tyler Bertuzzi scored twice and Andre Burakovsky also had a goal for Chicago, which won its second straight after losing three in a row. Knight had his sixth career shutout. The Blackhawks are in Detroit on Sunday.

Dustin Wolf had 23 saves for Calgary, which was coming off a season-high five-goal outburst in a win over Columbus on Wednesday.

(At) San Jose 2, Winnipeg 1: Will Smith scored the tiebreaking goal late in the third period, and San Jose beat Winnipeg.

Macklin Celebrini had a goal and an assist to move into the NHL scoring lead, and Alex Nedeljkovic finished with 32 saves for his third win in four starts. The Sharks extended their point streak to five games (4-0-1).

Josh Morrissey scored for Winnipeg, and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 25 shots. The Jets have lost two straight.
