There’s a New Baby Wild Horse at the Bronx Zoo
A Przewalski’s foal was born at the Bronx Zoo on April 21, and it’s as cute as you might imagine!
These aren’t your average horses. Przewalski’s horses (pronounced: “sheh-VAL-skee”) are stockier, shorter-legged, with a dark mane that stands straight up instead of flopping to the side, and they look almost prehistoric. They’re sometimes called Mongolian wild horses, and for good reason: they’re the last truly wild horse species left on earth.

At one point, they were completely gone from the wild. Extinct. The only ones left were in zoos around the world — and coordinated breeding programs slowly rebuilt the population enough that horses could eventually be returned to protected land in Mongolia and China. The Bronx Zoo has been part of that global effort.
That kind of turnaround doesn’t happen very often, though with fewer than 2,000 estimated worldwide, they’re still considered endangered. So every new foal matters more than it might seem.

Where to See the Foal at the Bronx Zoo
The baby horse can be seen from the Wild Asia Monorail, one of those classic Bronx Zoo experiences where kids are just as excited by the ride as the animals outside the window. Along the way, you’ll pass red pandas, tigers, rhinos, and other animals most people don’t expect to see in New York City.
Keep your eyes open along the monorail because that’s where you’ll catch the new foal grazing with the herd.
