The zoo recently shared a video of its endangered pygmy slow loris at 6 months old, showing families the adorable, tiny primate as it continues to grow and explore its habitat.
Born late last year, the young loris has already come a long way, but it still has plenty of growing to do. Pygmy slow lorises don’t reach their full size until they’re about 1½ years old. Even then, they’re surprisingly small, measuring just 6 to 10 inches long and weighing between 350 and 500 grams.
Pygmy Slow Loris Is Endangered
Native to Southeast Asia, pygmy slow lorises are considered endangered, and wild populations are threatened by habitat loss and illegal wildlife trafficking.
That’s why conservation programs at accredited zoos are so important in helping support the future of the species.
Families visiting the Bronx Zoo this summer can try to spot the young slow loris in the World of Darkness exhibit, a unique indoor space designed for animals most active at night, included with Bronx Zoo admission.
The exhibit is home to 24 species, and you see creatures you might not normally encounter during a daytime zoo visit.
The baby loris may be tiny, but it’s already doing a big job of reminding people why protecting endangered animals is so important.
