For 25 years, the Common Ground Foundation has been a guiding force in shaping the lives of young people across Chicagoland from those once unsure of their potential to those who simply needed someone to help ignite it.
Founded by Grammy and Academy Award–winning artist Common and led by his mother, Dr. Mahalia Hines, the foundation has become a beacon of hope, mentorship, and opportunity for Chicago’s youth. Through programs focused on education, mental health, and leadership development, Common Ground helps young people discover who they are and what they’re capable of becoming.
A Milestone Celebration
In honor of its 25th anniversary, Common, Dr. Hines, and a powerful network of supporters gathered at The Geraghty, 2520 S. Hoyne Ave., for a star-studded gala that raised more than $1.5 million — one of the foundation’s highest totals to date. The evening served as both a celebration of success and a reflection of 25 years of unwavering commitment, service, and impact.
Hosts Cedric the Entertainer and Anthony Anderson kept guests laughing, engaged, and inspired throughout the night. Among the attendees were Jennifer Hudson, Boris Kodjoe, J. Ivy, Roberta Shields, Angel Webb Reese, Melody Spann-Cooper, Phyllis Lockett, Dee Robinson, Dede Koldyke, and Pierre Cooper, among many others, a true testament to the vast network of believers in Common’s vision for youth empowerment.
Reflections on Purpose
During his remarks, Common reflected on his own journey, one rooted in faith, perseverance, and mentorship.
“You’ve got to give them [youth] what you’ve already overcome,” he said. “It ain’t always going to be easy; you get victories, and the next month you feel like a failure. But go for it anyway.”
Dr. Hines, an educator and the driving force behind the foundation’s mission, reminded attendees that the organization thrives because of its community; referencing those who give financially, volunteer, or simply spread the word about its work.
The Power of the Village
A recurring theme throughout the evening was the power of the village. The collective support system that helps shape young lives. Whether through mentorship, opportunity, or encouragement, that village gives youth the perspective and belonging they need to thrive.
Common’s own story embodies this idea. He was raised by a strong woman and was influenced by his childhood friend’s mother who worked for Mayor Harold Washington — he witnessed firsthand the power of education, faith, and purpose. While hip-hop became his voice, mentorship became his foundation.
Legacy of Impact
Today, the Common Ground Foundation’s reach extends far beyond classrooms and stages. Alumni have graduated from college, built successful careers – one worked with the band that supports Beyoncé while another styled Stevie Wonder. Many have returned to mentor, speak, and give back — continuing the cycle of empowerment.
As the foundation celebrates this major milestone, one truth remains: Common Ground isn’t just an organization, it’s a movement. A movement that continues to elevate, empower, and propel young people toward greatness.
Notable Quotes
Common:
“The reason I’m even able to be here is because of education. We wanted that to be the foundation for young people to feel cared for and to know they have a village looking out for them.”
Karl Kemp, Executive Director:
“As Executive Director, it’s amazing to see the seeds we’ve planted grow into our alumni and programming. I feel like a proud parent tonight watching our young people come back and give back. Seeing all of the supporters who’ve stood with us over the years lets me know we’re doing the right work.”
Khalil Everage, Actor and Alumnus:
“It definitely takes a village. There aren’t many actors from my neighborhood from the inner city but Common Ground dug us out. I grew up on the East Side and went to school in Englewood. There are no actors where I’m from. I wouldn’t be here today without my village.”
Boris Kodjoe:
“Our youth are everything, they’re all we’ve got. We must do a better job investing in them. Rashid (Common) and his mother have filled a gap where government often fails, bridging divides for marginalized youth and helping them find their purpose, talent, and path to the future.”
While the night was filled with laughter and inspiration, it was also a powerful reminder that progress happens through partnership. The Common Ground Foundation’s success, like the youth it serves, is the product of a village working together to transform lives, one dream at a time.
