Ready to hear the haunted side of the Windy City?
The Embers of the Windy City: Chilling Chicago Ghost Tour led me on a chilling stroll through one of Chicago’s most historic neighborhoods, Lincoln Park. I uncovered a blend of eerie true stories and the familiar sights of the city’s rich architectural backdrop.
This one-hour ghost tour in Chicago offered more than cheap scares. It delivered real history, well-researched tales, and just enough spookiness to give you goosebumps. From mysterious disappearances to chilling acts of the past, each stop shared a story that lingers long after the tour ends. I can’t stop thinking about the two kids who disappeared.
A passionate guide led us through Lincoln Park—a neighborhood built on top of the city’s first cemetery—creating a hauntingly memorable way to experience a tour in Chicago with ghost stories that most locals, including me, have never heard.

I chose the 8:00 PM Windy City Ghosts tour on a perfect weekday evening. The weather couldn’t have been better for a ghost walk. It was comfortably warm, and the skies were clear. It was the kind of night that invites you to linger in Chicago’s historic streets.
We gathered at the Tin Man statue in Oz Park, a fun and fitting spot to kick off a ghost tour. If you’re planning to go, look for your guide in a US Ghost Adventures t-shirt, holding a lantern (very on-theme!).
I mistakenly arrived at the west end of the park and saw the statue of Dorothy. Lucky me. I had just enough time to wander past the playground and the Scarecrow to reach the Tin Man.
So plan on arriving at least 15 minutes early, just to get your bearings, meet others who booked the tour, and settle in before the storytelling begins.

🕯️ Haunting History and Memorable Moments
Alec, a seasoned guide with three years of experience, led us through a deep dive into Chicago’s darker past—not a theatrical ghost show, but something richer.
Alec was passionate and well-researched, weaving true accounts tied to each stoop. One standout moment involved The Bad Apple, where he shared the tale of the infamous Bearded Bootlegger.
But the story that truly sent chills down my spine? A chilling tale of a blood sacrifice that allegedly occurred in the 20th century—unexpected and unsettling.
🎭 Spooky Meets Scenic

There is a 7:00 PM tour, but I’m glad I chose the later one.
Walking through the neighborhood at night felt atmospheric and just a little eerie—in the best way. The quiet streets, dim lighting, and historic architecture gave everything a subtle glow, as if the past was just beneath the surface.
As we walked through the neighborhood, the mix of old pubs, small theaters, and modern storefronts set the scene.
Restaurants and shops stood shoulder to shoulder as the smell of food permeated the air. I mentally noted a few places in case I wanted to return to some of the restaurants in Lincoln Park.
The occasional flicker of a streetlamp added just enough drama to make you glance over your shoulder. Lincoln Park after dark had a charm that’s both welcoming and haunting—perfect for ghost stories.
The architecture alone is worth the walk, but layered with ghost stories and local lore, it makes the city feel alive with secrets.
The stories sparked my imagination. I found myself picturing the characters and the events as they were told. I had never heard most of the stories, except for one about the Couch Tomb.
The creepiest moment for me involved a pair of children who mysteriously vanished from a theater after a performance. It was a classic urban ghost tale that left everyone hushed.

🗺️ Easy to Book, Walk, and Enjoy
Booking the tour was a breeze. You can book directly on their website or a third-party website, like Get Your Guide.
The meeting point is at the Tin Man statue at the southwest corner of Larrabee St. and Webster Ave. This is a helpful detail that’s worth noting if you plan to go.
The group was small, about eight people, and the walking pace was easy. The tour was flat and accessible, making it suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.
👻 Our Guide: Knowledgeable and Approachable
Alec proved to be an exceptional guide who took pride in his storytelling. With over three years of experience leading these tours, he drew from deep research and referenced specific details in every story he shared.
His style was informative, fun, and captivating, and he actively encouraged questions throughout the tour.
He created an interactive experience that felt more like a conversation with a knowledgeable friend than a rehearsed presentation.
I was impressed to hear personal stories about the Red Lion that locals had told him, adding another layer of authenticity to the night.
🎁 Extras and a Few Surprises
Some guests even added fun extras, such as EMF meters or ghost-themed souvenirs from the Lizzie Borden Museum.
An EMF (Electromagnetic Field) meter is a device that detects and measures electromagnetic fields in the environment. In paranormal investigations, these handheld devices are commonly used by ghost hunters who believe that supernatural entities can manipulate electromagnetic energy, causing spikes or fluctuations in EMF readings. We did see the meter spike at a few of the spots. That was very cool.
The Lizzie Borden Museum is located in Fall River, Massachusetts. It is the house where one of America’s most infamous unsolved murder cases took place in 1892. Lizzie Borden was accused (but acquitted) of brutally murdering her father and stepmother with an axe.
Now that you know about these available options, you can tailor your experience and budget extra paranormal fun on your tour.

Ghostly Ground Rules

⏱️ Be on Time:
If you are directionally challenged, arrive early. There are plenty of things to do in Lincoln Park, or you can enjoy a stroll through the park. There are also benches to take a load off and relax. It will be difficult to catch up to the group if you miss the kick-off.
💦 Rain or Shine (Bring the Umbrella, Not the Drama):
Chicago tours run in all kinds of weather—sun, rain, or spooky fog. If the tour gets canceled (rare, but it happens), they’ll reach out and let you know. Otherwise, grab your poncho and your ghost-hunting spirit.
💵 Tip Your Ghouide (See what I did there?):
Loved your tour? Show your guide some love! Tips are always appreciated—cash is great, but Venmo, CashApp, Apple Pay, and the like are all fair game these days. Ghost stories don’t pay the bills, after all.
🤫 Ghost Etiquette 101:
No smoking, no chatting during the guide’s stories, and please be kind to your fellow ghost seekers. The spirits might not mind, but the rest of us do.
🐾 Furry Friends Welcome:
Dogs and well-behaved pets are totally allowed as long as they don’t try to chase any ghosts (or bark over the spooky parts).
🔄 Need to Reschedule?
No worries! Just make sure to do it before the tour starts. Heads-up: there’s a $10 rebooking fee, but that’s a small price to pay to commune with the undead on another night.
🚶♀️ Missed the Tour?
If you arrive late or can’t find the meeting point, unfortunately, no refunds. It’s up to you to show up at the right place, on time—ghosts don’t wait. However, I saw a review from someone who couldn’t make the tour, and Windy City Ghosts reached out to assist them. So you never know – if you’re polite and proactive, they just might work some magic on your behalf.
Final Thoughts
If I had one suggestion, it would be to include brief introductions among the guests at the beginning. It would’ve been nice to know where everyone was visiting from, especially since Alec asked if we believed in ghosts (spoiler: over 80% of us said yes—including me!).
If you enjoy hearing stories, a ghost tour in Chicago that combines eerie tales with real history is a must-do.
This was one of the smoothest walking tours that I have ever been on (and there are quite a few in the mix). The small group experience made it more enjoyable. I didn’t have to weave my way to the front to hear narratives. I especially appreciated the manageable walking pace because it gave me a chance to stop, take photos, and catch up with the group with a light trot.
