Family raises funds for Jalyah Thompson memorial mural after tragic suicide

BELVIDERE, Ill. (WTVO) — Jalyah Trevino Thompson, an 11-year-old victim of bullying, tragically took her own life earlier this year. Her family held a benefit on Saturday to fund the creation of a mural in her memory.

The benefit event was organized to raise money for a mural dedicated to Jalyah, who was described by her family as a normal kid, but despite her cheerful demeanor, Jalyah was suffering from bullying, which ultimately led to her tragic death in February.

“She loved getting into makeup. She loved doing makeup. She loved singing. She loved playing Roblox. She’s been on that iPad, like, she just was like a normal kid. Normal kid doing normal things,” said Jada Trevino, Jalyah’s sister.

“She didn’t tell me that she was struggling. She just had a smile on her face and was just happy and smiling and always laughing and stuff like that,” Jada Trevino added.

“It’s very important for everybody to remember and to remember how important this topic is. Suicide is a real thing, bullying is a real thing. And it’s very unfortunate how she passed away because of the words of others,” Jada Trevino emphasized.

“I would love for anybody that goes down there to look at her and then also see about bullying and suicide. That might make them think, this is not something that is a joke. This is a very serious, serious thing,” said Rhona Trevino, Jalyah’s grandmother.

Rhonda Trevino, Jalyah’s grandmother, highlighted the widespread nature of bullying, urging schools and authorities to take action to prevent further tragedies.

“It’s not just Jalyah. Many kids are experiencing bullying every day. If the authorities or schools don’t take action, it will continue. Everyone must come together to make a change,” said Ronda Trevino.

Jalyah’s family hopes the mural will serve as a reminder of the serious consequences of bullying and suicide. They aim to raise awareness and encourage people to take these issues seriously.
