Kelley Blue Book Senior Editor Mike Danger has a growing family. Honestly, we’re not sure how he manages to balance his work and home lives so seamlessly. He recently took a long road trip in an electric vehicle, a 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5, and was kind enough to create this video. Ride along with Danger and his family, and he’ll share tips and tricks for managing your EV experience.
As you saw, Danger planned for his family’s comfort, safety, and convenience before embarking on this trip. Some of his tips included:
- Pack with a purpose: An EV SUV like the Ioniq 5 has enough cargo room to accommodate all the stuff a family needs on a road trip.
- Plan your route: Use your vehicle’s navigation system to plot your journey, including charging-station locations, so you get to your destination with sufficient battery power.
- Prepare for weather: Extreme weather, cold or hot, can significantly impact your EV’s driving range. Check for conditions along your route and adjust your stops accordingly.
- Plugs and adapters: If your EV has a North American Charging System (NACS) or Tesla connector, don’t forget to bring your adapters to let you connect to J1772 standard charging stations – you might not find an NACS charger when you need one.
Suppliers are constantly adding EV charging locations across the country, which means a family road trip like Danger’s will be easier every year.
