Christopher Loubsky’s abstract art is a negotiation between chance and control. Much of his subject matter becomes alternative realities, e.g. atmosphere, weather, or memory. Swaths of color are worked and reworked, interrupted, and layered.

The underlying meaning of his gestures is a record of decisions and intuitive reactions to the painting process. As an artist, he dismantles the boundaries between representation and abstraction. His smeared applications using a palette knife rather than brushes, give his compositions the capacity to push paint to its limit so that the viewer still inherently searches for form or meaning within.

His abstract paintings convey sentiments that are undeniably simple and true, and demonstrate his direct touch in creating them. Although his works do not appear to be as aggressive or emotive, or as spiritual or philosophical as the Abstract Expressionists were, they are visually similar. Recalling artworks that are tangentially connected to the AbEx, Loubsky’s paintings still convey ideas, responses, and reflections of yesterday’s markmaking.

There is also a logical connection in his artwork to Neo- Expressionism.  His expressive fields embrace an abstract language that focuses on the effects of color and translucency. Unique to this exhibition are a series of monotypes he created with Master printer Angela Risinger at the Peoria Art Guild Print Studio.

By his own admission, Loubsky intentionally does not share his insight with his audience.  Instead, he invites them to engage in a personal exploration of his artwork.  By encouraging them to consider his imagery and color palette, he hopes these monotypes will evoke their own unique memories, experiences, or emotional attachments. In his works there is a silence that gives us reason to pause and consider what is between the in-between.

While working in the Print Studio certain parameters established this series.  Limited to 12- x 12-inch paper, Loubsky worked intuitively, reacting to color, substrate, and compositions in a matter of minutes.  One work led to another, or held onto an element that was not meant to be lost.  It is always exciting to be an observer while collaboration between artist and Master Printer occurs. Success lies in the trust and understanding of inspiration and the creative spirit for both. This path was evident in the Print Studio.
