Every park needs a sandwich shop or two within short walking distance. McCarren hasn’t had a super convenient option—Anthony & Son is a little far, and Frankel’s closes early—until Malavita, which is just a few blocks away from the northern end in Greenpoint. Their big Italian sandwiches are a reliable option, and they’re open until 7pm, so if you’re catching a sunset in the park, they’ll still be there when you get off work. The shop does have some seating, but we’d use it for takeout.

Food Rundown
Linda
Of the ones we’ve tried, this breaded eggplant sandwich is our favorite so far. The eggplant has a nice crispy-creamy texture, and its complemented by roasted peppers, ricotta salata, and big handful of fresh basil.

Giardiniera
The crunchy giardiniera really rounds out the mozzarella and ribbon-thin slices of mortadella and salami in this sandwich, and the olive spread gives it a muffaletta-like feel. A good choice if you’re looking for cold cuts.

Combo
The prosciutto, soppressata, coppa, and mozzarella are high quality, but for $21, this sandwich was pretty understuffed.
