Mobley Makes Easy Work of George Washington in 53-48 Road Win

Loyola women’s basketball ended their two-game road trip to the DMV with a 53-48 win over George Washington University. Graduate guard Alexus Mobley had a game-high 19 points while Revolutionaries third-year forward Sara Lewis added 15 points.

Mobley opened the game by grabbing a George Washington miss and connecting on a three-pointer for the first points of the game. Over a minute passed before the next bucket — courtesy of Mobley on a layup.

Third-year Revolutionary forward Kamari Sims got them on the board with a jumper before another minute-long cold snap hit the floor. A single free throw from Mobley broke the streak.

Her free throw opened a 6-0 Rambler run, followed by a Mobley 3-pointer and a layup from second-year guard Alexa Kinas, making it 11-2. Sims broke the streak with a jumper which was immediately matched by second-year forward Brooklyn Vaughn. Revolutionaries first-year guard Colleen Phiri made a layup to cut the lead down to seven.

Phiri’s layup proved to be the last George Washington point of the quarter as neither side scored for nearly two-and-a-half minutes before a layup from second-year forward Roisin Grandberry with two seconds left ended the first quarter up 15-6.

George Washington’s second-year guard Gabby Reynolds opened the second quarter with a layup before being outmatched with a three from third-year guard Rosalie Mercille. Consecutive trips to the line followed for the Revolutionaries for former Rambler and fourth-year guard and forward Emma Theodorsson and second-year guard Tanah Becker, both making one of their two attempts.

First-year guard and forward Alex-Anne Bessette got her first point of the game on a free throw, followed by another Mobley make to expand the lead. Lewis made a singular foul shot before Mobley added another layup to make it 23-13.

The Revolutionaries went on a rampage with a 12-0 run to take their first lead of the game, led by a layup from Sims, a three-point play by second-year guard Jaeda Wilson, a Phiri three, a layup from Lewis and a Reynolds jumper to take a 25-23 lead.

Mercille tied the game up at 25 before Vaughn grabbed the lead with two free throws. Lewis was fouled by Mercille, who tied the game with two shots as the two schools entered halftime tied at 27.

George Washington started the second half hot with seven straight points from a Reynolds 3-pointer and consecutive layups from Lewis. Fourth-year guard Kira Chivers got the Ramblers on the board with a layup before first-year Revolutionaries guard Mia James finished a fastbreak layup off a Reynolds steal.

First-year guard Daniella Matus made a foul shot before Reynolds added a layup to make it 38-30, in favor of George Washington. Neither side scored for the next three minutes before Mobley made a layup, and Mercille sank a three to cut the Revolutionary lead to 38-35 to end the third.

Lewis started the fourth quarter with a layup before Mercille connected on a spot-up three. Lewis added another layup as Mobley and Bessette went perfect on back-to-back trips to the charity stripe to tie it at 42.

Kinas went one-for-two on a trip to retake the lead, which the Ramblers held for over a minute before a free throw from Becker tied it again at 43. Bessette took over with the next four points on consecutive layups — the last point for nearly two minutes — before Sims made a free throw to make it 47-44.

Vaughn followed with a finish in the paint which was matched by a floater from Theodorsson. George Washington began to intentionally foul as Mobley made two foul shots, and Sims added a layup to cut the lead to three. Bessette was fouled with six seconds left, knocking down both shots to finish the game in a 53-48 Rambler victory.

Head coach Allison Guth spoke on how proud she was of the whole team in the win.

“This was a total team effort,” Guth said. “ It was so cool to see so many people step up. The tone was set early by Mobley being a scoring threat off the bounce and in the paint. In my opinion, it was the best game we’ve had from Mercille all season. We only had 12 turnovers, a season-low. Overall, it was a great team effort in this big win.”

The Ramblers take the court next back home, facing Atlantic 10 foe La Salle University Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m.. Streaming will be available on ESPN+.
