PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — During April, local health organizations are working to spread awareness about organ, eye, and tissue donors.
Lauren Moreland, donation liaison supervisor for Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network of Peoria, said she was excited to bring attention to the issue.
She said more than 100,000 people are waiting for a life-saving organ donation. While 95% of people in the U.S. said they believe in donations, only about 60% are registered.
“The importance is really to, throughout the month of April, to spread awareness, so people register their decision, they talk to their families, and they share with their families their decision to donate as well,” Moreland said.
Moreland said they hope to get 25,000 registered in Illinois to become organ donors by the end of April.
