Grabbing a bite with Joey Wright
Each week, we chop it up with the folks responsible for dishing up food around the area. What restaurant should we try next? Let Joey Wright know at jwright@news-gazette.com
Big Thorn Farm and Brewery‘s focus is on beer.
But that doesn’t mean the popular Georgetown stop hasn’t had success with its food truck since first opened its window outside the brewery during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
“We’ve kind of changed the menu over the years, and we’ve done a little bit of everything,” co-owner ANNA SCHWEIG said. “We’ve done sushi and burgers and soup and all kinds of things out of our little food truck.”
The food truck was added a few years after Big Thorn first opened its doors in 2016.
Business has been good since then, with a second location — Salty’s Pub in Tilton — set to open in early January. Big Thorn hopes to offer wine and spirits in the near future, as well.
“Our community needs cultural elements so badly,” Schweig said. “In Vermilion County, we don’t have a lot of food outlets that are run by owner-operators who really care about what they’re doing. And we’re the only brewery.”
Big Thorn will also host its year-end brunch celebration on Sunday, Dec. 28, with a menu that includes raspberry cream-stuffed French toast and salmon black bean tacos.
“We always do an early-bird party on New Year’s Eve,” Schweig said. “That’s always fun. We do a toast at South Georgia Island time, which is 8 p.m. our time.”
