Grabbing a bite with Joey Wright
Each week, we chop it up with the folks responsible for dishing up food around the area. What restaurant should we try next? Let Joey Wright know at jwright@news-gazette.com.
Mama T’s in Bement has been a part of Tara Garrett’s life for more than three decades.
And Garrett — who started working there as a high school student and now owns the restaurant that she’s worked at for all of six years since — wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I love the small town,” Garrett said. “Born and raised here all my life, very close-knit community. Everybody does what they can to help each other out … for such a small town, it’s very giving, and I really like that about Bement.”
The Bement staple prides itself on serving pizza, pasta, subs and more, including nightly and monthly specials.
And it has a menu that reflects what the town likes.
“We’re actually offering a new sub this month, the chicken, bacon, ranch sub,” Garrett said. “We have an open campus here in Bement with the high school.
“We serve a lot of them at lunch time, and they started ordering the chicken, bacon, ranch as a sub a couple years ago.”
A helpful staff has helped Garrett keep things running smoothly as she manages commitments beyond the restaurant.
“I like that I can make my own schedule,” Garrett said. “That’s what’s helpful for me. My oldest daughter, she’s been in sports since fourth or fifth grade. I can work around my kids’ schedule. Now she’s in college and she does college track, so I can make sure that I’m available to go wherever I need to go.”
