MATTOON — A man accused of using his truck to strike and injure his ex-wife and her husband in the Walmart parking lot has been arrested on preliminary charges including attempted first-degree murder.
The Mattoon Police Department reported that Dennis (Joe) White, 44, of Mattoon turned himself in at 10:34 a.m. Monday at the police station and he is now in the custody of the Coles County jail.
White also was arrested on preliminary charges of aggravated battery with great bodily harm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, leaving the scene of an injury accident, and reckless conduct. The arrest report has been forwarded to the Coles County State’s Attorney’s Office for consideration of what action to take in court.

The police department reported that officers were dispatched at 2:54 p.m. Saturday to the Walmart parking lot in reference to a hit-and-run incident involving two pedestrians. It was reported that a white colored truck hit two individuals and fled the scene.
Upon arrival, officers, located two injured individuals. They were taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center by ambulance for treatment of injuries. One victim identified her ex-husband, White, as the suspect.
“After speaking to witnesses and observing surveillance video, it was determined that White accelerated and turned his truck into the victims while they were walking in the parking lot,” the new release reported. “One victim was treated at the hospital and released while the other remains hospitalized.”
