Why You Should Jump in the Lake (Even If It Means You Have to Submerge)

There once was a girl who almost said no. Not because the water was too cold, or the lake wasn’t beautiful—but because she had done her hair. Somewhere along the way, getting it wet had started to feel like the greater tragedy. But the lake kept sparkling, laughter echoed across the boat, and for one perfect summer afternoon, the memories won.

The internet has given us a funny little word: submerge.

If you know, you know.

It’s become shorthand for absolutely not getting your hair wet. The unofficial rule of girls’ trips, beach vacations, and pool days everywhere.

And honestly? Most days… I get it.

But every once in a while, life hands you a moment that’s worth a ponytail.

Because years from now, no one is going to remember whether your blowout survived. They’ll remember that you jumped.

The good news? We can have both. Here’s my formula for looking put together after a spontaneous swim.

1. Embrace the ponytail.

The second your hair is wet, stop fighting it. A sleek ponytail always looks intentional. Bonus points if it’s still dripping a little, it proves you chose fun.

2. Let your accessories do the talking.

A great pair of sunglasses, layered necklaces from IDALIA, and that on-trend hat can carry an entire look. I never thought I would wear a cowboy hat until Cosmopolitan Coast started making these on-of-a-kind bejeweled Haute Hats. Suddenly, “I just jumped in the lake” becomes pulled together.

3. Never skip the lip.

If there’s one thing that instantly makes you feel polished again, it’s a beautiful lip combo. My latest obsession is Smashbox’s Halo collection. A little color, a little shine, and suddenly you look like you planned the whole thing.

At Once Upon a Dollhouse, we romanticize everyday life. Sometimes that means setting the table with the good plates. Sometimes it means wearing the pearls to the grocery store.

And sometimes… It means submerging anyway.

Because the memories are always prettier than the perfect hair.

Choose delight. The hair will dry.
