Women's Track & Field Finishes Seventh at NEC Indoor Championships; Brewton Named Outstanding Field Performer and Most Outstanding Rookie



STATEN, ISLAND, N.Y. – Chicago State women’s track and field turned in a competitive showing at the 2026 Northeast Conference Championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, highlighted by a conference champion, multiple podium finishes and strong scoring efforts across the track and field events.

The Cougars were led by Makiyah Brewton, who delivered a standout performance in the jumps. After Brewton captured the conference title in the long jump with a mark of 5.95m to score 10 team points yesterday, the freshman also earned eight points in the high jump with a second-place finish, clearing 1.67m, giving her 18 total points across the two events and establishing herself as one of the top field performers at the meet.


Chicago State continued to make an impact in the horizontal jumps as Lena Cleveland placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 11.67m to earn eight points. Cleveland also added a sixth-place finish in the long jump, contributing additional team points in a deep field.


On the track, Katherine Thornton led the way in the hurdles and sprints. Thornton placed third in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.80 to score six points and later added a sixth-place finish in the 400 meter dash, accounting for nine total points. Latonia Johnson also played a key role in the scoring, finishing sixth in the 60 meter dash, fifth in the 200 meter dash and seventh in the long jump to contribute across multiple events.


In the throwing events, Bryanna Boroze added four points with a fifth-place finish in the shot put, while the Cougars saw additional representation in distance events from Weronika Stanczak in the 800 meter run and mile.


Behind Brewton’s conference championship performance in the long jump and the high jump podium finish, she was named the Most Outstanding women’s field performer and Most Outstanding Rookie.
