The Marching Illini gather of their practice field in Champaign on Monday, August 18, 2025.
Like the football program they support, the Marching Illini are on a roll. The band never has been bigger (about 420 students) or better.
“The talent level,” Director Barry Houser said, “is absolutely phenomenal.”
On Day 2 of preseason practice, Houser gathered his musicians for a photo and video shoot that plays out on the cover of today’s print edition and at news-gazette.com. The rousing rendition of “Oskee Wow Wow” made it clear the kids had been practicing before arriving on campus Sunday.
Marching Illini Director Barry Houser addresses Band 157 from the tower at its practice field Monday in Champaign.
There are plenty of opportunities to see and hear for yourself ahead of the football opener on Aug. 29. Band 157’s hectic schedule includes:
Thursday’s Sights & Sounds event at Memorial Stadium.
Friday’s New Student Convocation at State Farm Center.
Saturday’s Illiac at Champaign’s Hessel Park (3-9 p.m.).
Sunday’s Quad Day.
Their game day routine — a major draw especially during the lean years of football — is more fun to prepare for, Houser said, with the Illini nationally ranked:
“This year, there’s a different level of anticipation,” said Houser, in charge since 2015. “Everyone’s excited.”
